Shabbat 86b

We had our first class and loved it. What was it like to wait for Moses to come down the mountain?

  1. I think it was very unnerving. You had no idea WHEN he was coming down, IF he was coming back at all, and WHAT was going to happen next.All you knew was that you had just witnessed something amazing and terrifying at the foot of Mt. Sinai - and you couldn't even touch your husband or wife yet ( even for comfort - because, of course, this could lead to sex...)

  2. Why do you think this issue of determining the exact day and what was going on during the 5+ waiting days before Matan Torah is of such significance?

  4. Dorit;
    We read that the Torah does nottell us the precise day on which Matan Torah took place, with comparison to the exact mention of the time and day of the Exodus. We are only informed that Bnei Yisrael arrived at Har Sinai in the third month and ON THAT/THIS DAY. There is no clear indication how many days actually passed between their arrival at Har Sinai and Matan Torah ( Shmot 19:3).

    Thus, I think that the rabbis REALLY wanted Matan Torah to have happened on Shabbat, so they are trying to go back from the 7th day and see how they can fill in the blanks…
